Rachel Woodward

Please welcome our new Range Mistress ‘Madame Bulldog’

I started shooting for fun in 2002. I had handled a few guns when I was growing up and I really like it when I hit what I was aiming for. I chose the name Madame Bulldog because she was a real person from the old west and it went a long with my husband’s alias also.

Madame Bulldog, once Kitty O’Leary, ran what was euphemistically known as a dance hall in Montana. Her joint, she said, was a decent one. Announcing that she would stand for no dam foolishness, she saved the wages of a bouncer by polishing off roughnecks herself. Calamity Jane was one of her associated for a time, but legend has it that they fell out, whereupon Madame Bulldog tossed Calamity into the street, as easy as licking three men. When asked whether Calamity Jane really tried to fight back, one who knew both women replied, Calamity was tougher’n hell, but she wasn’t crazy! Calamity Jane and Madame Bulldog ran saloons in Leadville, Colorado in the red light district at the lower end of Harrison Avenue.
